Karume slowly recovering

Senior politicians and other leaders continue to flock the home of veteran politician Njenga Karume to comfort him in his illness. The family says the former cabinet minister has been unwell but is responding well to treatment. President Mwai Kibaki and Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta are some of the high profile figures that have called on Karume this week.

The Kenya Defence Forces are claiming what they say is their biggest victory yet in their sixteen week stay in Somalia. The forces say last evening they captured two critical centres of Hosingo and Baadade. However, one veteran who now lives in Nyeri says he would be happy to give a few tips to the troops. 62-year-old Layfields Mureithi fought in the 1977 Shifta War in Somalia, and as Brenda Wanga reports, he says it was much more difficult back then.

That is the Cinderella story of one Southern Sudanese boy who was ranked fourth in last year’s KCPE exams. Ntv’s Rose Wangui covered Tito Yak’s story when he was declared a top candidate and just this week, caught up with him as he took up his place at one of Kenya’s best schools.

The death toll in the horror road accident in Kisumu last night has now risen to 26. One more person died in hospital this afternoon as relatives thronged the local mortuary in search of bodies of their loved ones. Rescuers had battled for most of last night trying to remove bodies from the wreckage. Witnesses say the accident occurred when a lorry rammed into a matatu that had stopped at a roadblock on the Kisumu-Kakamega highway. As Ntv’s Ouko Okusah reports, residents are now blaming the police for the tragedy.

Now to another building collapse that nearly turned into a tragedy. At least six people were seriously injured after a building under construction caved in, in Mwiki, on the outskirts of Nairobi. The afternoon incident saw the first floor of the building come down in what is alleged to be the use of substandard materials in its construction.

The Kenya Defence Forces are claiming what they say is their biggest victory yet in their sixteen week of stay in Somalia. The forces say on Friday evening, they captured two critical centres of Hosingo and Baadade. The two centres are said to have been key transit points for improvised explosive devices and contraband goods to the rest of Somalia and northern Kenya. At the same time the KDF says it is still on the trail of the Kenyans abducted last month in Wajir.

A group of MPs allied to ICC suspects Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and Eldoret North MP William Ruto have reacted angrily to a statement by UK foreign secretary William Hague regarding the duo's presidential aspirations. In a statement read by trade minister Chirau Ali Mwakwere, the MPs claim the United Kingdom has no right to comment on the case. The MPs are headed for a public meeting in Malindi, where Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto are chief guests. On Thursday high court judge Isaac Lenaola barred public debate on whether Uhuru and Ruto can run for the presidency.

The Nairobi City Council is planning to give commercial workers a licence to operate freely in the Central Business District. The Mayor George Aladwa says he has received petitions from hundreds of twilight girls who claim they are harassed by city askaris while on duty. As James Smart reports, City Hall has chosen a rather significant day to make the big announcement.

New education system could come in 2013

If you have a child in standard four this year, he or she may well be among the first group of candidates to try out the proposed new education system. The government hopes to put the 2-6-3-3-3 system in motion next year and have the first standard six exams in 2014. But the report launched today must now go to cabinet and parliament before it can be implemented. And as Sheila Sendeyo reports, it will cost you some 1.4 trillion shillings to effect.

People living with HIV are a worried lot after it emerged that the global fund that finances AIDS programmes in the country may soon dry up. The fund has already rejected several applications from African countries owing to a shortage of finances. Kenya received an equivalent of nearly 30 billion shillings in the last disbursement and as Pamela Asigi found out, many aids campaigners are now keeping their fingers crossed.

The global fund also finances anti-malaria programmes in Kenya and now a new study suggests that the disease kills nearly twice as many people than earlier thought. A study published in the British Medical Journal Lancet says malaria killed some 1.24 million people globally in 2010, but only half of that number was reported. The World Bank has granted the Kenya government 1.5 billion dollars an equivalent of 124 billion Kenya shillings, set to fund various projects in infrastructure, energy and water resources. The funding will be spread across a period running from 2012 to 2014. It is expected to finance key projects aligned to the country development blue print vision 2030. NTV's Aby Agina reports.

The court issued the orders following an application by members of the civil society seeking to bar the two from running for the country’s top leadership. President Mwai Kibaki formally inaugurated the upgraded airport in the Lakeside City but failed to grant a request to change the airport’s name. A section of leaders from the region had wanted the new airport named after the late veteran opposition politician Jaramogi Oginga Odinga. Ntv’s Ouko Okusah now reports on that and many other requests that simply couldn’t fly.
